Description
This invention is an acellular central nervous system (CNS) biologic product derived from adult porcine spinal cord. This CNS/spinal cord acellular biologic product results from enzymatic and chemical treatment protocols to remove various cellular and extracellular materials from the spinal cord. Upon completion of this process, the acellular CNS/spinal cord biologic scaffold initially has gel-like physical qualities. These gel-like properties allow the biologic product to be directly injected into tissues, including the brain and spinal cord, to create a local niche/environment conducive to regeneration. This biologic product can also be lyophilized for storage and potentially used as a sheet, made into a powder and subsequently reconstituted as either a solution or a gel for use. It can be sterilized using irradiation, ethylene oxide or other methods. This CNS/spinal cord biologic scaffold supports the growth of neuronal cells in preliminary studies.
