Gluconeogenesis is essential for maintaining blood glucose levels and providing the only fuel source for the brain, testes, and red blood cells during starvation. This process happens in a pathway regulated by insulin. When hepatic insulin signalling fails, gluconeogenesis becomes unabated, which leads to excessive glucose production.
