ClockWork : For Better Health and Well-Being
University of Pittsburgh researchers have developed an innovative behavioral health intervention, ClockWork, that targets four key behavioral health risk factors—light/dark exposure, sleep, eating, and physical activity—each regulated by the circadian timing system (CTS). This multicomponent intervention emphasizes optimizing these behaviors using the “ART” framework: the right Amount, on a Regular basis, at the right Time. By integrating the science of circadian rhythms with behavior change strategies, ClockWork offers a comprehensive approach to improving health and well-being. The intervention is delivered through personalized coaching sessions and supported by digital tools for tracking and feedback.
Description
ClockWork is based on a circadian framework designed to optimize key health behaviors through personalized coaching and digital monitoring. The intervention includes 12 in-person or telephonic sessions with a ClockWork coach, during which participants learn to optimize their light/dark exposure, sleep patterns, eating habits, and physical activity. Participants monitor their behaviors and implement changes using paper forms or web-based tools. The ClockWork platform also plans to integrate mobile applications and personal fitness/activity monitors, such as Fitbit, for more effective behavior tracking and goal-setting. This holistic approach addresses multiple co-occurring behavioral health risk factors, promoting sustainable health improvements.Applications
- Behavioral health intervention- Integrated health monitoring via mobile apps and personal fitness devices
- Personalized coaching for individuals with modifiable risk factors
