Description
Using digital transcriptome subtraction on a Merkel cell carcinoma tumor, the inventors have identified and isolated a cDNA similar to but distinct from an oncogene from a known class of viruses that cause tumors in animals. This virus is now called Merkel Cell Virus (MCV). Using this sequence, they have isolated the remaining sequence of the virus genome. They have identified this viral nucleic acid in 6 of 8 MCC tumors but none of >50 control human tissue nucleic acids. Additional tissue panel searches have revealed that MCV is rarely found in other malignant and nonmalignant tissues but may also be the cause of additional tumors and human diseases.
