Peroxisome-Proliferator Activated Receptor-Alpha Agonists for Organ Preservation

Description

When added to an organ preservation solution, Peroxisome Proliferator Activated Receptor-alpha (PPAR-alpha) agonists were observed to improve markers of renal preservation in isolated perfused kidneys whereas perfusion in untreated kidneys caused apoptosis and loss of tissue architecture. The combination of gemfibrozil, a PPAR-alpha agonist, with mannitol, a known organ preservation agent, led to further enhanced renal preservation. Therefore, PPAR-alpha agonists, particularly when combined with mannitol, function as organ preserving drugs and hold potential for improving the viability and function of harvested organs.
