University of Pittsburgh researchers have developed an updated version of the PIVOT SoftwareApp, primarily aimed at usability and routine maintenance. The update was undertaken to support the use of the app in a clinical trial. This software could revolutionize the field of orthopedic surgery by improving the workflow and user experience.
Description
The PIVOT app is a software tool designed for use in orthopedic surgery. The recent updates have improved its compatibility with current generation iPads, enhanced the user interface, and added user roles to the web and mobile applications. The software now also supports API for sending data to an electronic data capture system used in a clinical trial.
This invention is a new image analysis technique to quantitatively assess motion-based testing of injury. A video of a test being performed can be processed to track the motion of markers and/or bodily landmarks in two or more dimensions to quantitatively describe motion, thereby removing the subjective aspects typically associated with motion-based testing. In an example, the pivot shift test is a commonly used test for evaluating rotational instability of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL)-deficient knee. The pivot shift test's subjective grading scale can be quantified and refined using image analysis techniques. PIVOT combines a tablet computer with camera and image analysis software to analyze knee motion based on markers. It is used for adjustment of diagnosis at time of diagnosis, providing real-time feedback during surgery, and for adjustments during injury rehabilitation. Data is stored on the tablet with optional cloud-based storage.
Applications
- Clinical Trial Tool
- Orthopedic Surgery
- Workflow Improvement
- User Experience Enhancement
Advantages
The PIVOT app has been updated for improved functionality, including better offline (no wifi) functionality, improved user management, and administrator functionality. The software is now hosted on the University’s HIPAA-compliant Microsoft Azure Service, ensuring data security. The ability to extract and analyze data from the software could enable more research in this field and lead to novel discoveries related to orthopedic surgery and clinical trials.
Invention Readiness
The updated PIVOT app is ready for use in the STABILITY2 Trial,. The software was developed under a services contract with OpenArc.
