Strickland Research Training (START) Program

The University of Pittsburgh (Pitt) Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) and the Bidwell Training Center, a nonprofit organization that provides vocational training, developed the Strickland Research Training (START) program, an innovative initiative aimed at fostering diversity and inclusion in clinical research.

Description

The START program was developed to address the lack of diversity in the clinical research workforce. By creating a new career pathway through the Bidwell Training Center, the program aims to reach and train individuals from underrepresented and second-career backgrounds who may not have otherwise had the opportunity to enter the field of clinical research. The hands-on training, externship experience, and job placement support are all designed to equip these individuals with the necessary skills and connections to launch successful careers in research.

Applications

Diversity and inclusion in clinical research

Advantages

The Strickland Research Training (START) program represents a novel and comprehensive approach to diversifying the clinical research workforce and creating new career pathways for underrepresented and second-career individuals. By providing a combination of foundational training, hands-on experience, and ongoing support, the program is well-positioned to contribute to more diverse and representative clinical research teams, ultimately enhancing the quality and relevance of research efforts.

Invention Readiness

This technology is at the copyright level. The core components of the START program include a 12-hour didactic curriculum and an optional clinical research-related externship at Pitt. The curriculum covers responsible conduct of human subjects research and good clinical practice, providing students with the foundational knowledge and skills required in the field of clinical research. During the externship, students have the opportunity to work alongside experienced research teams, gaining hands-on experience in tasks such as participant recruitment, informed consent, and data collection.
